Electricity rates go up for domestic consumption in Punjab

Electricity rates hike in Punjab : In a significant development impacting households across Punjab, the electricity tariff for domestic consumption has seen a notable increase. The rates, which previously stood at 10 paise per unit, have now been hiked to 15 paise per unit. 

The Punjab State Electricity Regulatory Commission has issued the Tariff Orders containing tariff/charges for FY 2024-25 vide Orders dated 14.06.2024. In the Orders, the Commission has determined the true-up of FY 2022-23, ARR for FY 2024- 25 and Determination of Tariff/charges applicable for FY 2024-25 in respect of Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) and Punjab State Transmission Corporation Limited (PSTCL). The Commission has decided to make the new tariff/charges applicable w.e.f. 16th June, 2024 up to 31st March 2025. 



For domestic consumption, the rates have risen from 10 paise to 15 paise per unit for usage up to 2 KW. For usage between 2 KW and 7 KW, there is an increase of 12 paise per unit. 

Industrial electricity rates have also seen a rise, with an increment of up to 15 paise per unit.

Key Highlights of the Tariff Order

Tariff Effective Dates: New tariffs will apply from June 16, 2024, to March 31, 2025. The previous tariffs will be in effect until June 15, 2024.

Minimal Charge Increase: The Commission aims to keep consumer burden minimal with only a slight increase in charges.

kVAh Tariff for Domestic Consumers: From January 1, 2025, the kVAh Tariff and Contract Demand system will extend to Domestic Supply consumers with loads exceeding 20 kW.

Voltage Rebate: Continued with a base energy charge of ₹5.31/kVAh.

PIU Load Consideration: PIU loads up to 100 kVA in mixed-load industries are not considered PIU loads, extending this policy through FY 2024-25.

Special Night Tariff: Maintained for industrial consumers using electricity exclusively from 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM, with a 50% reduction in Fixed Charges and a variable energy charge of ₹5.31/kVAh.

Extended Night Category Hours: Allows night category consumers to use electricity during extended hours (6:00 AM to 10:00 AM) at normal tariff rates.

Cross-Subsidies: Maintained within ±20% in line with the National Tariff Policy.

Tariff Merging and Power Quality Regulations: Steps to merge tariffs for Power Intensive Units and General Industry, with compensation for Total Demand Distortion (TDD) breaches.

Green Energy Tariff: Reduced to ₹0.54/kWh for renewable energy requisition, down from ₹0.94/kWh in the previous year.

Feed-in-Tariff for Solar Power: Approved at ₹2.51/kWh for Net-Billing/Gross Metering Consumers.
