Google I/O 2024: Google's Gemini AI to soon identify spam calls on android devices

PTC News Desk: With restricted availability at first and only certain phone support options, Google's AI in Android 15 will identify phone scammers utilising Gemini Nano for privacy, warning users about questionable patterns like phony bank calls and gift card requests. For additional security, users have the option to activate the scam detection tool.

Google is using artificial intelligence to identify and alert users in real time to possible phone scams. The Android operating system will include the feature in a later release. It is anticipated to launch alongside the next Android 15 later this year.

The functionality makes use of Gemini Nano, Google's tiniest Generative AI version that operates alone on the user's smartphone to protect privacy.

When users feel they are speaking with a scammer, the AI notifies them based on its analysis of communication patterns frequently linked to scams.

The AI will search for warning signs, such as calls posing as bank employees and demanding private data, such as PINs or passwords, or demanding payments for gift cards or urgent money transfers. The user can choose to continue or cancel the call by responding to a notification that the AI displays on their device when it notices these questionable trends.

Although the functionality might shield a lot of consumers from falling for frauds, initially it might not be widely available. Given that Gemini Nano is only compatible with the Samsung S24 and Google Pixel 8 Pro smartphones, this feature ought to be restricted to those models going forward.

Users won't have to worry too much about the AI listening to their calls, according to Google, because users will have to select to activate the scam detection feature.

The business is now testing this functionality and will likely provide additional information later in the summer as the Android 15 gets closer to its stable release.
