Nawaz Sharif claims victory in Pakistan elections: Sources

PTC News Desk: On Friday, Nawaz Sharif, Pakistan's former Prime Minister, proclaimed victory in the national elections, asserting that his Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) party had emerged as the largest contender in the results.

Despite independent candidates supported by rival Imran Khan leading in the ongoing count, Nawaz Sharif, a three-time prime minister, confidently declared his party's dominance following the announcement of over 150 National Assembly results.

The unexpected lead of independent candidates backed by the incarcerated former prime minister, Imran Khan, contrasted with allegations of election manipulation in favor of Nawaz Sharif, made by Khan's supporters and a national rights organization. Amidst mounting tension and concerns over electoral integrity, Islamabad police imposed a curfew in the capital, prohibiting public gatherings and issuing stern warnings of legal repercussions for any breaches of law and order.

The delayed release of election results overnight fueled frustration and anxiety among voters, who attributed the delays to alleged ballot-rigging practices. As of the latest tally, independent candidates have secured approximately 85 seats, while Nawaz Sharif’s PML-N trails behind with around 59 seats. The Pakistan Peoples Party, led by Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, is closely behind with 31 seats.

Although a parliamentary majority requires 133 seats, analysts express doubts about the election producing a decisive victor, anticipating a potentially fragmented outcome.
