Ailing Pervez Musharraf set to return to Pakistan

Islamabad (Pakistan), June 14: Pakistan's former military ruler Pervez Musharraf, who is in hospital for the last three weeks due to health-related complications, is set to return home from self-imposed exile, according to the Voice of America (VOA).

However, the exact date of his arrival in Pakistan is not disclosed. According to highly placed government sources, Pakistani officials are making preparations to let the 79-year-old former general return home. As per the report, Musharraf would be brought back to Pakistan via air ambulance from a Dubai hospital with the consent of his family and doctors. Musharraf has been living in the UAE since 2016, when he was granted bail to travel abroad for medical treatment. He was facing treason charges in Pakistan at the time, which were eventually overturned by a high court judgement.

Musharraf's health began to deteriorate last week, according to media sources. His family, on the other hand, denied he was on a ventilator and tweeted that he is going through a difficult stage of recovery as his organs are malfunctioning. "He is not on the ventilator. Has been hospitalized for the last 3 weeks due to a complication of his ailment (Amyloidosis). Going through a difficult stage where recovery is not possible and organs are malfunctioning. Pray for ease in his daily living," his family said on Twitter.

This build-up of amyloid proteins (deposits) can make it difficult for organs and tissues to function properly and can lead to organ failure if not treated timely, according to National Health Service, UK. In view of the general's ailing health, Pakistani Defense Minister Khawaja Asif said he should have "no obstacle" in returning home. "Past events should not be allowed to stand in the way. May Allah help him recover so he can spend his remaining life with dignity," Asif said on Twitter on Saturday.

Musharaf seized power in a bloodless military coup in 1999, toppling Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's elected government. He eventually declared himself president and ruled Pakistan until his political allies lost the general elections in 2008, forcing him to step down to avoid impeachment by the new parliament.
