Centre relaxes family pension rules for missing Central government employees

New Delhi, May 23: In a big relief, the Centre has relaxed family pension rules for missing central government employees, particularly those serving in militancy affected areas like Jammu and Kashmir, North-East and Naxal prone pockets. According to a new Office Memorandum (OM) issued on Monday, in all cases where a Government servant covered by the National Pension System (NPS) goes missing while on duty, the benefits of the family pension will be paid to the employee's family immediately, and if he re-appears and resumes service, the amount paid as family pension during the intervening time of his missing period can be deducted from his salary. Pension rules for missing Centre employees relaxed (3) Previously, if an employee went missing, his next of kin would not receive the family pension, and the family pension would not be paid until he was declared dead in accordance with the law or seven years had passed after he went missing. Union Minister Jitendra Singh made the announcement on Monday. The changes in the pension rules were brought about following cases of abduction of central government employees working in violence-prone areas, the Minister said and added the move was taken "to instil confidence and to protect them and their family interests".
