Assam man accused of killing wife and soring severed head in refrigerator, dies after jumping off police van
PTC News Desk: Ramanuj Goswami, a 30-year-old man from Guwahati accused of killing and beheading his wife and keeping her severed head in a refrigerator, died on Monday after allegedly jumping from a moving police vehicle, officials said.
The incident took place early Monday when police were taking Goswami back to Hatigaon Police Station after his medical examination at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH).
According to Hatigaon Police, Goswami suddenly attacked the police team and jumped from the moving vehicle near the Narakasur Pahar area. He fell into a gorge and suffered serious head injuries. Police rescued him and rushed him to GMCH, where doctors declared him dead.
Goswami was scheduled to be produced in court on Monday as his seven-day police custody had ended on Sunday.
He was arrested for allegedly killing his 25-year-old wife, Riya Talukdar, at their flat in Guwahati’s Beltola area on September 3. Goswami, who worked as a cab driver, had married Riya on September 22 last year.
Wife’s murder
Police said Goswami suspected that his wife was having an affair. Following an argument on the morning of September 3 over the alleged affair, he reportedly killed and beheaded her.
He then allegedly kept her severed head inside a refrigerator.
The crime came to light after neighbours complained about a foul smell coming from the flat. Police later recovered Riya’s severed head and fingers from a black polythene bag kept inside the refrigerator, officials said.
Goswami surrendered to police on the night of September 6 and was arrested. That same night, police recovered Riya’s body and the severed head.
