Road caves in Bengaluru during Metro construction, injures biker

Bengaluru, January 12: In yet another shocking case of civic apathy, where a biker was severely injured after a massive sinkhole appeared in Bengaluru's Ashok Nagar area, Bengaluru Police said on Thursday.

The incident took place on Brigade Road near Shoolay Circle, it was captured on CCTV. "The sinkhole emerged due to the construction of the ongoing second phase of metro tunnel work," Bengaluru Police said on Thursday.

The man is named Puneeth was injured after a portion of a road caved in. The man was riding his bike on Brigade Road when the portion of the road caved in the central business area of the city.

The incident took place near an area where the tunnel boring work for metro construction was taking place. 

The police further said that the road collapsed during the construction of metro work from Trinity Circle to Shivajinagar. Currently, they have closed the movement on the road.

"The second phase of metro tunnel work is going on from Shivajinagar, it's tunnel work. The sinkhole appeared during construction of underground work," Bengaluru Police said.

Previously, on January 10, an under-construction metro pillar had collapsed near Nagavara on the outer ring road in Bengaluru. The incident took lives of a woman and her toddler son. The woman's husband and daughter were hospitalised with injuries.

On Wednesday, Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) suspended its Deputy Chief Engineer, Executive Engineer and Site Engineer after the under-construction metro pillar in Bengaluru collapsed and claimed two lives. An FIR has been registered against unidentified persons in connection with the collapse of an under-construction pillar in Bengaluru, police said on Tuesday.
