Nitish Kumar hints at key expectations in return for supporting NDA | In Detail

PTC Web Desk: In a defining moment for Bihar politics, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar reiterated his unwavering support for the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and Prime Minister-elect Narendra Modi. Addressing a gathering of newly elected NDA MPs in the Central Hall of the old Parliament building, Nitish Kumar pledged his unconditional allegiance, marking a significant shift in his political stance.

Nitish Kumar, who joined the NDA in January after previously switching allegiances between the NDA, the opposition-led Mahagathbandhan, and the INDIA bloc, made it clear that his commitment to the ruling alliance was resolute. "We will stay with you for whatever you need. We are with you," he affirmed, underscoring his support for Modi during the NDA MPs' meeting. "The Janata Dal (United) supports the leader of the NDA, Narendra Modi, for the position of Prime Minister of India," he said.

Having been a pivotal figure in Bihar politics since 2005, Nitish Kumar recently took oath as Chief Minister for the ninth time, following his renewed alliance with the BJP. Known for his frequent political realignments, earning him the moniker 'Paltu Ram,' Nitish Kumar's latest declaration of loyalty aims to dispel any doubts about his dedication to the NDA.

In his speech, Nitish Kumar exuded confidence, reflecting a firm commitment to the alliance. His handshake with Modi symbolised the strengthening bond and mutual trust between the two leaders. The Janata Dal (United), having secured 12 out of 16 seats contested in Bihar, is poised to play a crucial role in the third Narendra Modi government. The BJP, with 240 seats in the 2024 Lok Sabha election, fell short of the 272-seat majority, making Kumar's support vital for the NDA's stability.

Kumar's speech, delivered in his characteristic casual yet impactful style, brought humour and light-heartedness to the event. Prime Minister-elect Modi was seen chuckling several times during Kumar's address. "You [Modi] are going to take the oath on Sunday; I would have preferred it to be today itself. But whenever you wish, it is good. My request was that your oath-taking ceremony happen as soon as possible," Kumar quipped, eliciting laughter from Modi and other NDA leaders.

In a gesture of respect, Nitish Kumar attempted to bow and touch Modi's feet after his speech, but Modi responded by shaking his hands, signifying mutual respect and camaraderie.

Despite his unequivocal support, Nitish Kumar hinted at certain expectations in return. He expressed hope for significant progress in Bihar under Modi's leadership. "We are thrilled that he (Modi)  is going for another term after serving as the Prime Minister for the last 10 years. He has served the entire country, and we trust him to serve all the states too," Kumar added. He subtly alluded to Bihar's long-standing demands, including the Special Category Status (SCS) and addressing the state's underdevelopment issues.
