2019 Defamation case: Rahul Gandhi disqualified from membership of LS from date of his conviction

New Delhi, March 24: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was on Friday disqualified from the membership of the Lok Sabha from date of his conviction  in 2019 criminal defamation case.

It comes after a Surat court convicted Rahul Gandhi over his remark about the 'Modi' surname. He has been sentenced to two years in jail in the 2019 criminal defamation case. Meanwhile, the court has also approved his bail and suspended the sentence for 30 days to allow him to appeal.

Rahul Gandhi made the "how come all the thieves have Modi as the common surname" remark in April 2019, at a Lok Sabha election rally at Kolar in Karnataka. The criminal defamation case against Rahul Gandhi was filed by BJP MLA from Surat West Purnesh Modi.
