Ex Sarpanch's son shot dead in Punjab's Barnala, FIR against two
PTC News Desk:In a shocking incident, son of a former Sarpanch Sukhwinder Singh Calcutta was shot dead on Saturday evening at the Sehna bus stand. Police have launched investigation into the matter.
Calcutta had been known for being vocal on religious issues and recently shifted his allegiance from Congress to Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar). He was in the news due to his criticism of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Bhadaur MLA Labh Singh Ugoke.
Senior superintendent of police Sarfaraz Alam confirmed that Jinder Singh, a person with prior associations to Sukhwinder, allegedly shot him around 4.30pm. Both men were sitting together at a property dealer’s office near the bus stand when the attack occurred. Preliminary reports suggest that the murder resulted from a personal dispute between the two.
“Jinder Singh shot Sukhwinder while leaving the spot. The two were known to each other. Based on initial evidence, the motive appears to be a personal conflict, but further investigation is underway. We are actively working to apprehend the accused,” said Alam.
Reacting to the incident, Congress leader Sukhpal Singh Khaira condemned the murder the raised questions over deteriorating law and order situation across the state.
“I condemn the broad daylight murder of Sukhwinder Calcutta Sarpanch Sehna (Barnala) which shows total breakdown of law and order in Punjab!” Khaira wrote on X.
He further alleged political vendetta, saying, “Since the victim was a vocal opponent of Aam Aadmi Party and its MLA Labh Singh Ughoke, the angle of vendetta cannot be ruled out because Manish Sisodia, AAP Incharge Punjab, had recently propagated the policy of ‘Saam-Daam-Dhand-Bhed’ to capture Punjab! We Punjab Congress demand an independent inquiry into this brutal murder because Punjab is now a Police-State.”
