The day before Diwali holds a special significance as it marks the eve of the grand celebration. Let's delve into the puja rituals and the significance of this auspicious day.

Diwali Puja

The day before Diwali is known as Naraka Chaturdashi or Choti Diwali. On this day, people perform various rituals and ceremonies to prepare for the main Diwali festivities. The evening is dedicated to the worship of Goddess Kali or Lord Krishna, depending on the cultural and regional variations.

The puja typically involves the lighting of lamps and incense sticks, offering flowers, fruits, and sweets to the deities, and reciting prayers and hymns. Many households also engage in the ritualistic cleaning and decorating of their homes, creating a welcoming and festive atmosphere.

Significance of Choti Diwali

Victory of Good over Evil: Naraka Chaturdashi symbolises the triumph of good over evil. According to Hindu mythology, on this day, Lord Krishna defeated the demon Narakasura, freeing the world from his tyranny. The celebration represents the victory of light and righteousness over darkness and wickedness.

Preparation for Diwali: The day before Diwali is crucial for preparations. People clean and decorate their homes, illuminate them with diyas and colourful lights, and create intricate rangoli designs at their entrances. This sets the stage for the grand celebration of Diwali, creating a joyous and festive ambiance.

Cleansing Rituals: The act of cleaning one's home is not just physical but also symbolic. It is believed to purify the surroundings, inviting positive energy and prosperity. The meticulous cleaning process is a way of preparing both the outer and inner self for the upcoming festival.

Prayers for Prosperity: The puja ceremonies are also an opportunity for devotees to seek the blessings of the deities for wealth, prosperity, and well-being. The lighting of lamps signifies the dispelling of darkness and the ushering in of light, symbolising knowledge and enlightenment.

Family and Community Bonding: As families come together to perform the rituals, the day before Diwali fosters a sense of unity and togetherness. Sharing the joy of the festival with loved ones and neighbors strengthens social bonds and creates a sense of belonging.
