Moscow terrorist attack: One of deadliest attacks in Russian history | IN POINTS

PTC Web Desk: The attack at the Crocus City Hall in Krasnogorsk, a Moscow suburban concert hall, that left over 60 dead and and 100 injured is one of the deadliest attacks in Russian recent history and that too just a few days after Vladimir Putin secured tne sixth term as Russian president. Gunmen unleashed chaos, leaving a devastating toll of at least 60 dead and 100 wounded, according to the Russian authorities.

Attack Details: Gunmen in 'Tactical Uniforms'

Witnesses described a scene of terror moments before the scheduled concert by the Piknik rock band commenced. Automatic gunfire erupted, sending shockwaves through the crowd. Eyewitnesses reported seeing between two to five assailants, clad in tactical uniforms and armed with automatic weapons, storming into the concert hall and indiscriminately opening fire.

Videos circulating on Russian social media platforms depicted the chilling moments as attackers made their way into the venue. Additionally, distressing footage showed panicked concertgoers fleeing for their lives amidst the chaos and confusion.

Escapes and Rescues Amidst the Chaos

As the concert hall transformed into a battleground, scores of attendees sought refuge behind seats or desperately attempted to flee through basement exits or access points to the roof. The Emergency Situations Ministry disclosed that fire services facilitated the escape of approximately 100 persons through the basement.

Fortunately, all members of the Piknik group were safely evacuated from the premises. Rescue operations were swiftly initiated to reach individuals trapped on the roof as flames engulfed the venue, further complicating the evacuation efforts.

Hunt for Perpetrators and Terrorism Probe

The Russian authorities wasted no time in launching a manhunt for the attackers, while simultaneously initiating a thorough investigation into the incident, labeling it as an act of "terrorism." The United Nations, United States, European Union, and other Western nations swiftly condemned the attack, expressing solidarity with the victims and denouncing such heinous acts of violence.

Although the Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the attack, Russian officials refrained from attributing blame immediately. Former President Dmitry Medvedev issued a stern warning, vowing to obliterate any Ukrainian involvement in the assault.

Global Reactions and Speculations

While the United States condemned the "horrible" events, officials stated there was no evidence implicating Ukrainian involvement. In contrast, Ukrainian intelligence pointed fingers at "Russian special services," alleging the attack would serve to escalate hostilities.

Furthermore, accusations against Ukraine were dismissed as a "planned provocation by the Kremlin" by the Ukrainian foreign ministry, highlighting the geopolitical tensions underlying the tragedy.

Warnings and Historical Context

Amidst the shock and grief, attention turned to prior warnings issued by the US embassy, citing the risk of "extremists" targeting mass gatherings in Moscow, including concerts. Additionally, recent operations against suspected Islamic State fighters in Ingushetia underscored Russia's ongoing struggle against terrorism.

The dark history of radical attacks resurfaced, with memories of past atrocities such as the 2002 Dubrovka theatre hostage crisis haunting the collective consciousness. The tragedy served as a grim reminder of the perpetual threat posed by extremist elements, both domestically and internationally.
