New Delhi, December 20: Congress Lok Sabha MP Abdul Khaliq was brutally trolled on Twitter on Monday after he tweeted that Argentine football legend Lionel Messi, who led his country to the FIFA World Cup title, was born in Assam.
Amidst brutal trolling, the Congress leader who had congratulated Messi on his spectacular World Cup victory over France had to delete his tweet. Khaleque also asked people to check his timeline before spreading "rumours" after deleting his tweet.
"Before spreading rumours, I request all to check the timeline of my Twitter handle and the official Facebook page," he added in another tweet.
However, close sources to Abdul Khaliq stated that the Congress leader tweeted about Messi's 'Assam connection' after coming across some news items on Facebook and some other media.
Khaleque had earlier tweeted, "Congratulations from the core of heart. We are proud of you for your Assam connection."
Argentina defeated France 4-2 on penalties to win the 2022 FIFA World Cup after the teams were tied 3-3 after extra time.
Messi scored twice, and Kylian Mbappe of France scored three times in a losing effort.
Argentina won the World Cup for the third time, its first since 1986.
