PTC Web Desk: As flight delays and cancellations continue to disrupt travel plans amid dense fog, passengers are reminded of their rights and entitlements when faced with such situations. A recent incident involving an Air India flight from Delhi to Mumbai has brought attention to the importance of understanding and advocating for passenger rights.

In this specific case, the unnamed passenger highlighted several factors that fueled frustration among travellers, including restless children, lack of food, and non-functional air-conditioning during a 17-hour delay. The incident occurred amid widespread flight cancellations across multiple airlines due to dense fog and low visibility in New Delhi.

Passengers are urged to be aware of their rights in such circumstances. In many jurisdictions, including India, passengers have specific rights and entitlements when faced with flight delays or cancellations. These rights typically include:

Right to Information: Airlines are obligated to provide passengers with timely and accurate information about the status of their flights. This includes details about delays, cancellations, and any available alternatives.

Compensation for Delays: Depending on the length of the delay, passengers may be entitled to compensation for inconveniences caused. This compensation could cover expenses such as meals, accommodation, and transportation.

Refund or Rebooking: Passengers have the right to choose between a refund of the ticket price or rebooking on an alternative flight if their original flight is cancelled.

Care and Assistance: Airlines are required to provide necessary care and assistance during extended delays. This may include meals, refreshments, and access to communication.

Boarding Priority: In cases of overbooking or involuntary denied boarding, passengers are entitled to compensation and priority boarding on a later flight.

In the Air India incident, the lack of food provision and mismanagement raised concerns about adherence to these rights. Advocacy groups and regulatory authorities play a crucial role in ensuring airlines comply with these regulations and prioritise passenger welfare.

As air travellers face uncertainties and disruptions, staying informed about their rights empowers them to seek the assistance and compensation they deserve. Airlines, in turn, are encouraged to enhance communication, transparency, and adherence to regulations to foster a smoother travel experience for all.
