Schloss Elmau (Germany), June 28: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was in Germany for the G7 Summit, presented its leaders with gifts showcasing India's rich art and crafts, notably those associated with Uttar Pradesh's one district, one product scheme.

A hand-knotted carpet, carved matka, itr bottles, tea set, brooch and cufflinks were among his gifts. PM Modi gifted German Chancellor Olaf Scholz a Metal Marodi carving matka; this nickel-coated, hand-engraved brass vessel is a masterpiece from District Moradabad, widely known as the Peetal Nagari or "brass city" of Uttar Pradesh, India. Following the casting of the pot, the design to be engraved is initially designed on paper. A fine engraving tool hammered with a wooden block is used to create an outline of the whole design. Because of the curved lines used to fill in the negative space in this design, this form of engraving is known as Marodi.

He gave US President Joe Biden a Gulabi Meenakari brooch and cufflink set. Gulabi Meenakari is a GI-tagged art form from Uttar Pradesh's Varanasi. The chosen design is imprinted in the metal after a piece of pure silver is formed into a base form. The embossed patterns are then expertly filled with crushed meena glass mixed with an intriguing natural glue made from pomegranate seeds. The paint is fired layer by layer for permanence, the motifs primarily use the colour pink (Gulabi), which lends its name to the craft.
