On the withdrawal of Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) from different parts of northeast, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh stated that the government did so whenever the situation in a place improved. He clarified that there was a “public misconception” that the Army always wanted AFSPA to remain in force. Rajnath Singh said it was the situation that was responsible for the imposition of AFSPA, and not the Army. Notably, the Assam Government organised the award ceremony to honour the sacrifices of soldiers who took part in the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, his Cabinet colleagues, and senior government officials were also present.
