Israeli missiles target location in Iran: Report

PTC News Desk: A recent escalation in tensions between Israel and Iran has sparked international concern, with reports emerging of Israeli missiles striking a location within Iran. The incident follows a series of drone and missile attacks launched by Iran, purportedly in retaliation for a suspected Israeli strike on Iran's embassy in Syria.

According to ABC News, citing a US official, Israeli missiles targeted a site in Iran in response to the recent spate of attacks. The situation has prompted calls for intervention from the United Nations Security Council, with Iran urging the council to compel Israel to halt its military actions against Iranian interests.

The repercussions of these events have been felt beyond the borders of Iran and Israel. Commercial flights over western Iran began rerouting their paths early Friday, as reported by the Associated Press. This development coincided with reports from an Iranian semiofficial news agency detailing "explosions" heard in the city of Isfahan. State television corroborated these reports, acknowledging the presence of "loud noises" in the region.

Fortunately, the majority of the drones and missiles launched during the recent exchanges were intercepted before reaching Israeli territory, mitigating potential damage and casualties.

Amidst escalating tensions, Iran's appeal to the UN Security Council underscores the gravity of the situation in the Middle East. Reuters reported that Iran's plea to the Security Council emphasised the need to address Israel's military actions targeting Iranian interests. The UN secretary-general has issued a cautionary statement, warning of the significant danger posed by the escalating conflict.

In response to Iran's recent aggression, Israel had previously announced its intention to retaliate, signaling a continuation of hostilities in the region. As tensions persist, the international community remains vigilant, monitoring developments closely in the hope of preventing further escalation and promoting diplomatic solutions to the conflict.

Iran strikes Israel in retaliation: Escalating tensions and international response

In response to a suspected Israeli airstrike on an Iranian consular building in Damascus, Syria, which resulted in the deaths of two Iranian generals, Iran launched a retaliatory attack on April 13th. This marked the first direct military assault by Iran on Israel, amid decades of hostility dating back to the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reaffirmed Israel's commitment to self-defense during a conversation with US House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, stating Israel's readiness to take necessary actions.

During the attack, Iran unleashed a barrage of drones, ballistic missiles, and cruise missiles towards Israel. However, Israel's military claimed to have intercepted 99 per cent of these projectiles, utilising its air defenses and warplanes in coordination with a coalition led by the United States.

While US leaders expressed a desire to avoid further escalation, they also reiterated their support for Israel's security. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced plans to ramp up diplomatic efforts against Iran in response to the escalating tensions.

The conflict between Israel and Iran-aligned groups has extended beyond direct confrontations, with incidents occurring in Lebanon, Syria, Yemen, and Iraq since the onset of the Gaza conflict in October.
