Ravi Dahiya bags gold at Asian Championship; silver for Bajrang Punia
Indian wrestler Ravi Kumar Dahiya bagged his third Asian Championship gold medal in a row with a dominating performance in the 57kg category, winning the title clash by technical superiority against Kazakhstan's Rakhat Kalzhan on Saturday. Meanwhile, Olympic medallist Bajrang Punia won a silver medal at the Asian Wrestling Championships in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. The Tokyo Olympics silver medallist, Ravi, took an early lead in all his bouts, but as is his wont, bounced back in tremendous fashion to outsmart his rivals in the men's freestyle event. It was Ravi Dahiya's second final of the season, after a silver at the Dan Kolov event in February. Ravi yet again showed his immense physical prowess and tactical superiority when he outwitted Japan's Rikuto Arai (VSU) and pulled off a comprehensive 12-5 win over Mongolia's Zanabazar Zandanbud en route to the final. He made six consecutive two-pointers and defended himself from a left-leg attack in the second period to earn India's first gold medal of the tournament this year. Last year, Ravi had won gold at the 2020 Delhi and Almaty editions. Meanwhile, Tokyo Olympics bronze medallist Bajrang Punia was defeated 65kg final 1-3 by Iran's Rahman Mousa Amouzadkhalili.
