Major General, 6 Others Sentenced for Life in Fake Encounter Case GUWAHATI: The Indian Army’s Summary General Court Marshal (SGCM) on Saturday awarded life imprisonment to seven army personnel. SGCM sentenced life imprisonment to a Major General and six others in a 24-year-old fake encounter case in Assam. The Army unit on Sunday confirmed that Major General, AK Lal, Colonel Thomas Mathew, Colonel RS Sibiren, Captain Dilip Singh, Captain Jagdeo Singh, Naik Albindar Singh, and Naik Shivendar Singh have been sentenced life imprisonment in a fake encounter case of 1994 in Tinsukia, Assam. Also Read: Nine get life imprisonment for SAD worker’s murder The army picked up 9 youths from different areas of Tinsukia district on 18 February 1994. They were taken into custody on a suspicion that they were involved in the killing of a top tea garden executive. After few days, the army soldiers killed 5 of them in a fake encounter and tagged them as United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA) militants. The army released the remaining four youths. Former Assam Minister and BJP leader, Jagadish Bhuyan, filed a Habeas Corpus petition in the Gauhati High Court on 22 February 1994 to know the whereabouts of the boys. The High Court asked the Indian Army about the 9 youths. The army later produced 5 dead bodies.
